Can you tell our readers about your background? - I spent 10 years working in ophthalmology before starting my business. When I discovered that I was pregnant with our second child, I started searching for ways to work from home and that’s when I stumbled across freelancing.

What inspired you to start your business?

The desire to spend more time with my two girls! My oldest was getting ready to start Kindergarten and I was pregnant with our second. I knew that I wanted to be present for their milestones and activities.

Where is your business based?

My business is completely remote but I am based in Texas.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I watched a lot of YouTube videos, read up on all that I could find about freelancing and Virtual Assistants, and then I decided to go all in. I chose to offer Social Media Management because it was what I was most comfortable with at first.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Networking through Facebook groups and using my personal social media accounts.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

For me the hardest part has always been based around what to charge a new client. When I was first starting out I really undervalued myself because I was new and I also didn’t understand the amount of work that really goes into handling a social media account - it’s a lot! Over the past year and a half in business, I’ve invested in mentors who have helped me and given me the confidence to charge more for my work.

How do you stay focused?

I am a huge fan of time blocking and making lists!

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

I believe what sets me apart is me. I know I’m not for everyone, and that’s okay, but the client’s that I work with I truly enjoy.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business? - I make it a point to spend time being intentional inside Facebook groups every day. I like to start conversations, provide value, and get to know people.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

Done is better than perfect! If you keep waiting for everything to be perfect before you start you’ll never start so just get out there and do it. You can learn almost anything as you go.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

Currently my favorite app is Flick.tech which is a hashtag research app. I love that it shows you the competition for each hashtag, lets you know if a hashtag is banned, and also tracks your reach on the hashtags that you’re using. My favorite book right now is Profit First by Mike Michalowicz.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

My favorite business tool of all time is Canva because I love how easy it is to create beautiful designs.

Who is your business role model? Why?

Rachel Pedersen! I admire her and her story so much. She has built a truly amazing business from the ground up with integrity, hard work, and she serves her clients and students from a high place of value. She’s incredible!

How do you balance work and life? - I try to be very intentional with my time. I set clear “business hours” with my clients so they know when they can expect to get a response from me. Once my oldest gets out of school for the day is usually when I clock out so that I can spend time with my family.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

I love to take a quick weekend getaway trip with my husband.

What do you have planned for the next six months? - I’ll be doing another Live round of my mini-course for moms who are wanting to start their own freelancing business!
