Can you tell our readers about your background?

My journey into the world of design began in Toronto, where I grew up and later attended college. From an early age, I was fascinated by the way spaces could influence emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. This fascination led me to pursue a career in design, where I could explore the intersection of aesthetics and functionality.

After gaining valuable experience at an architectural firm, I realized that my true passion lay in creating environments that were not just beautiful but also impactful. This realization led me to open my first office in Toronto, and continue to expand to the US with locations in New York and Miami. The lessons I learned during these early years—about the importance of blending aesthetics with functionality—have remained central to my design philosophy. Today, they continue to guide the work we do at The Designers Group, where every project is approached with the same commitment to creating spaces that are both visually beautiful and purpose-driven.

What inspired you to start your business?

The inspiration to start The Designers Group came from the belief that design has the power to change lives. I’ve always been passionate about the idea that spaces can do more than just look good—they can serve a meaningful purpose. Design has the potential to make a real impact on our daily lives.

This desire to make a difference through design was the driving force to establish The Designers Group. I wanted to build a firm that not only followed design trends but also set them, all while staying true to a vision of making the world a better place through thoughtful, purpose-driven design. Our motto, “Designing with purpose, creating a better world,” encapsulates this vision. It’s a reflection of our commitment to creating spaces that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also serve the needs of the people who use them. This approach has been central to our success and continues to drive everything we do.

Where is your business based?

The Designers Group is headquartered in three vibrant and culturally rich cities: Toronto, New York, and Miami. Each of these cities offers unique design challenges and opportunities, which keep our work exciting and diverse. Toronto, where our journey began, is a city with a deep appreciation for design and architecture. It’s where we established our roots and where we continue to draw inspiration from its blend of modern and historic architecture.

New York, with its energy and constant evolution, provides endless opportunities for innovation. It’s a city that demands the best, and working here pushes us to continually raise the bar in terms of creativity and execution. Miami, on the other hand, offers a completely different vibe with its vibrant colors, tropical influences, and a blend of cultures that inspire our approach to design in this market.

Although these three cities are our main bases, our reach extends beyond them. We’ve had the opportunity to work on projects across the U.S. and Canada. This geographical diversity allows us to draw on a wide range of industries, influences, and styles, which enriches our work and keeps us at the forefront of the design industry.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

Starting The Designers Group was a journey that involved both careful planning and a leap of faith. The first steps were all about laying a solid foundation. I began by conducting extensive market research to understand the needs and preferences of potential clients. This involved analyzing trends, studying the competition, and identifying gaps in the market where I believed our firm could make a difference.

Building a strong network of professionals was also crucial. I reached out to architects, contractors, and suppliers to establish relationships that would be essential for executing our projects. These connections were vital not just for the logistics of running a design business, but also for staying informed about industry developments and innovations.

Staying true to my vision was another important step. I knew that The Designers Group would be known for creating designs that were not only beautiful but also impactful. This meant being selective about the projects we took on, ensuring that each one aligned with our values and provided an opportunity to deliver exceptional results. As we began to take on more projects, our reputation for quality and purpose-driven design grew, and with it, the business expanded.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

The most effective way we’ve raised awareness for The Designers Group has been through the quality of our work. There’s no better marketing tool than a job well done. When clients are satisfied with the results, they become our best advocates, sharing their positive experiences with others and leading to referrals that have been instrumental in our growth.

In addition to word-of-mouth, building strong relationships within the industry has been key. Networking events, industry conferences, and collaboration with other professionals have all helped to raise our profile and connect us with new opportunities. We also make a concerted effort to stay active on social media, where we showcase our work and share insights into our design philosophy. This not only helps us reach a broader audience but also allows us to engage with our community and potential clients in a more personal and interactive way.

What have been your biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced has been expanding into new sectors and markets. Each sector comes with its unique demands and requires a deep understanding of its nuances. We take the time to immerse ourselves in each new market, learning about its specific needs, preferences, and regulatory requirements. This groundwork is essential in ensuring that our designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functionally appropriate for the intended use.

Another significant challenge has been staying on top of the advancements in technology, particularly in the areas of AI and design tools. The pace of change in these fields is incredibly fast, and it can be challenging to keep up. However, we’ve made continuous learning a priority at The Designers Group. We invest in training for our team and constantly explore new technologies that can enhance our design process. By integrating these tools into our workflow, we’ve been able to stay ahead of the curve and offer innovative solutions to our clients.

Sustainability is another challenge that’s close to my heart. Incorporating sustainable practices into our designs is something we’re committed to, even though it can sometimes be difficult and costly. We’ve addressed this by making sustainability a core value of our firm, ensuring that it’s considered in every project we undertake. This commitment has not only helped us create more environmentally responsible designs but has also resonated with clients who share our values.

How do you stay focused?

Staying focused is something that comes naturally when you’re passionate about what you do. For me, design is not just a job; it’s a calling. The idea of creating spaces that enhance people’s lives is what drives me every day. To maintain focus, I set clear goals for myself and the business, always keeping in mind the bigger picture of what we’re trying to achieve.

Prioritizing tasks is another key to staying focused. I make sure to tackle the most important tasks first, delegating where necessary to ensure that everything gets done efficiently. Delegation is crucial, especially when running a growing business. It allows me to focus on the areas where I can have the most impact while trusting my team to handle the other aspects.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance also plays a big role in staying focused. I make it a point to set aside time for myself, ensuring that I can recharge and return to work with a fresh perspective. Surrounding myself with a talented and dedicated team also helps, as it ensures that we’re all aligned and working towards the same vision.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

What sets The Designers Group apart is our client-centric approach. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Each project is tailored to the unique needs and preferences of our clients. This personalized approach ensures that the end result is not just a beautiful space but one that truly reflects the client’s vision and serves their specific needs.

We also leverage the latest technologies, including AI, to create innovative and efficient design solutions. These tools allow us to streamline our processes, enhance our creativity, and deliver results that are both cutting-edge and practical. But more than anything, it’s our commitment to purpose-driven design that truly differentiates us. We’re not just about creating beautiful spaces; we’re about creating spaces that have a positive impact on the world and the people who inhabit them.

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

Beyond traditional marketing, the quality of our work speaks for itself. Delivering exceptional results naturally leads to referrals and repeat business, which have been key drivers of our growth. We also focus on building relationships with clients, industry professionals, and vendors, which helps us reach a broader audience and create a network of support that’s crucial for long-term success.

Social media has also played a role in our marketing strategy. It’s a great tool for showcasing our work, sharing our design philosophy, and engaging with a wider audience. By consistently posting high-quality content and interacting with our followers, we’ve been able to build a strong online presence that complements our offline efforts.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

My best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs is to believe in your vision and be prepared to put in the hard work to make it a reality. The journey of an entrepreneur is not easy, and there will be challenges along the way. But if you’re passionate about what you’re doing and committed to your goals, you’ll find a way to overcome those challenges and succeed.

It’s also important to stay adaptable. The business landscape is constantly changing, and being able to pivot and adjust your strategy when needed is crucial for long-term success. Surround yourself with a strong support network, whether it’s mentors, advisors, or a talented team. These are the people who will help you navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and push you to keep growing and improving.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of persistence. Success doesn’t happen overnight, and there will be times when things don’t go as planned. But if you keep pushing forward, stay true to your vision, and remain dedicated, you’ll eventually reach your goals.

What are your favorite business tools?

Some of my favorite business tools include project management software like Zoho, which helps us keep track of tasks, deadlines, and team collaboration. In terms of communication, tools like Cliq have been invaluable, especially with our team spread across different cities. These platforms allow us to stay connected, share ideas, and collaborate in real time, no matter where we are.

What’s your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my proudest accomplishments as a business owner is the creation of TDG Gives Back, our firm’s charitable initiative. Through this program, we’ve been able to use our firm as a platform to make the world a better place. TDG Gives Back encompasses various efforts, including TDG Insider and TDG Furniture Exchange.

TDG Insider is focused on sharing knowledge and resources within the design community, helping emerging designers and professionals advance their careers. TDG Furniture Exchange is dedicated to repurposing and donating gently used furniture to those in need, ensuring valuable resources are put to good use.

These initiatives are a reflection of our commitment to giving back and making a positive impact. TDG Gives Back is more than just a program—it’s a core part of our identity, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the difference we can make by using our firm as a platform for good.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

When it comes to decompressing, I find spending time outdoors to be incredibly rejuvenating. Activities like biking and swimming keep me active and clear my mind, helping me recharge. Traveling is also a significant part of how I decompress; learning from new cultures and staying inspired by different places fuels my creativity. Whether I’m exploring new destinations or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, these experiences put things into perspective and help me return to work with renewed energy and focus.

What are your plans for the next six months?

The next six months are set to be an exciting time for The Designers Group as we expand our TDG Build operations. This expansion will allow us to take our vision-first approach to new heights, ensuring that design leads every aspect of the project, from planning to execution. Our goal is to bring client visions to life in a way that is more aligned.

We’re also exploring new markets and sectors, which will provide us with fresh challenges and opportunities to continue pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve. This expansion is a reflection of our commitment to growth, innovation, and delivering exceptional results for our clients.
