Can you tell our readers about your background?
I am a 28-year-old living on a tropical island in the Caribbean, but I was born and raised in Melbourne Australia. I studied at the Australian Catholic University, majoring in Psychology.
For the past four years, I have been traveling around the globe with my partner Josh. We were going to live in NYC, but we stayed there only for 6 months deciding to move to an island in the Caribbean. Both my partner and I live here for 6 to 8 months of the year, while the other months we travel.
A bit about my golfing background: I started golf when I was 9 years old, so I have been playing well over 15 years now. I used to play competitively but now its just for fun.
What inspired you to start your business?
I have been a passionate golfer for over 15 years now; I remember my dad taking me for my first game and I was instantly hooked. Like every keen golfer, I was excited to become a member of a golf course. I really enjoyed being part of the club; however, there were two main problems I ran into with female golf.
The first problem I ran into was the limited clothing choices that existed for female golfers. It was expensive, shapeless, and was not stylish. Due to the strict dress codes, we are limited to wearing long pants, modest skirts, and collared shirts. The clothing was outdated, stuffy, and not fitted.
This brings me to the second main problem in women’s golf: the lack of women playing golf. From my personal experience of playing in my golf club, there was not a large group of women golfers. It mainly consisted of women 70+, a few guys my age, and then the rest were men. I desperately wanted to meet some golfing girls around my age, so I tried other golf clubs; however, I kept coming across the same problem.
Together with bad fashion and a lack of women golfers, my level of enjoyment plummeted, and my desire to play diminished. So, I ended up giving up golf for a while and only played the occasional game with my dad. It wasn’t until seven years ago that I found my passion again when I met my partner Josh, and we started playing together each weekend.
This led me down a rabbit hole of researching whether other female golfers had similar thoughts about female golf. I found a few articles and forums discussing it; however, there were limited groups or pages dedicated to female golf. This is where the decision was made for me to create the Women Who Golf golfing page and group, leading me here today running my business.
Where is your business based?
It is based worldwide but runs from my office in the Caribbean. I connect to my audience via the Women Who Golf Facebook group.
How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?
It started with an idea I formulated over 10 years ago: that I wanted to create a women’s golf fashion line. That thought has always been in the back of my mind; it wasn’t until 6 months ago that this thought reappeared again. The problem was that I had no idea what women in golf needed and wanted. I needed to get information about what female golfers really wanted.
The first step was creating a Facebook page and link it to the Women Who Golf Group. The second step was promoting the page via Facebook ads while trying to figure out how to use Facebook ads effectively. The third step is engaging with the audience and encouraging them to engage in the group.
The final step is to maintain an active and engaging community for female golfers, and let them dictate what products and services they desire.
What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?
Facebook advertising has really helped grow this group. Organic growth is great, but it is slow, I needed to get those numbers soaring. Facebook advertising was a new area I had not explored before, so it did take some time to try and learn. Although many of the ads I posted may not have been perfect, it was a huge asset in helping awareness.
What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?
The biggest thing getting in my way of success was having the confidence to go ahead to create this business. Like so many, in my teens and twenties, I struggled with self-confidence and a lacking of the belief that I can achieve what the next successful person has done. Self-doubt is a negative mental block that can get in your way from success.
I managed to overcome this confidence issue by simply just doing it. Do not let the fear of ‘what if’ happens to be the reason for not giving something a go. Over time, I have self-discovered that the attribute of being successful is just doing it, not talking about doing it, or planning it. Here we are 5 years later, I don’t see 2015 Shia LeBeouf video as much of a joke anymore. JUST DO IT!
How do you stay focused?
I stay focused by setting realistic and achievable weekly goals all leading up to the bigger picture, the end goal. I find it that if I have too big a goal, I become overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. This goal setting method is Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Sensitive, or SMART Goals. Setting them out like this, helps me keep focused and always working towards my end goal.
How do you differentiate your business from the competition?
There is an opportunity for these members to actively be involved in creating a golfing product that they want.
What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?
So far using Facebook Ads, targeting female golfers has been the most effective way to group the page and group.
What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?
Do your research! Before starting any endeavor, you need to investigate the area you want to go into. It is amazing, even after 30 minutes of Googling, how more knowledgeable you are in your area. For me, I found how beneficial Facebook groups are and how you can build a business from them.
What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?
Favorite App: Canva for creating posts and Facebook ads.
Favorite Blog to help me start my business was Neil Patel on Moz. He has a great step by step on anything about online marketing. He goes into enough detail and clear step by step, that really works for me.
Favorite Book, I admit I am not a regular reader. Audible has helped me with that; currently listing to Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell.
What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?
The Facebook community we have built is our number one resource. Through this, we can survey the needs and wants of the greater market, involve them in the decision cycle, and gain thorough feedback in real-time.
Who is your business role model? Why?
My biggest mentor, guide, advocate, the supporter is my partner, Joshua Strawczynski. Josh does not only just run a phenomenally successful marketing agency, but his view on the business world is exceptional. He has been a huge help in helping me systems to follow when creating my first business.
How do you balance work and life?
Living on a tropical island with one of the most beautiful beaches in the world really helps with creating a distraction from work-life 😉 . I really try to make time to do an activity I really enjoy and make sure work doesn’t interrupt that. The beauty of not having a 9-5 job is that your work hours relate to what works with you best. You just have to make sure you set realistic work times, and rest time.
What’s your favorite way to decompress?
My favorite way is cooking; I love finding a new healthy recipe and whipping it up in the night. I put on a podcast I’m currently listing to, season 3 of Serial, and cook. When I am at that stove, is when I am most relaxed.
What do you have planned for the next six months?
My plan is to become the Number One female golfing group on Facebook and creating the first Women Who Golf product.
