The Best Advice on Getting Into a Film Festival

Whether you are trying to kick-start or reinvigorate your career, entering a film festival can help you gain legitimacy and acclaim like lawyer and promoter John Branca did. Festivals may receive hundreds or thousands of submissions. How do you make your film stand out?

Do Some Research

Some festivals accept any type of film, and others only include a specific genre. Many of them favor films from local creators. Most festivals, like 74 Venice Film Festival, have a website that will list previous winners. Find some that fit your style of filmmaking.

Go to as many of these festivals as you can. You will be able to get a feel for the atmosphere, and you will also meet the organizers as well as other directors. If the facilitators are familiar with you and your work, your film may be more likely to be accepted.

Make Organizers Take Notice

You will be expected to complete an application for each festival. Brainstorm what makes your film different from the other submissions they will receive. For example: did you use unique equipment? Is your story about a marginalized community?

Most applications will include an opportunity for you to include a personal summary. Describe what makes you a perfect candidate for consideration. Tell the organizers why you chose their festival in particular. Did you film in the area where the festival is held? Did any of your cast in crew grow up there? Why would their audience want to see your film?

Form a Game Plan

When you are sure that your film is ready, register for well-known festivals first, like Tribeca, Cannes, Venice or Sundance. Be aware that these events expect to hold the first showing of your film, so do not premiere it anywhere else first. You can enter your film into lesser-known festivals afterward to expand your audience. Offer your film to as many of these events as you can.
