Entrepreneur Liang Chiu: 5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became A CEO

Liang Chiu

I think the movement I’d like to be more involved with would be more kindness and openness. I see and experience firsthand this whenever I travel abroad. I was able to make friends with Uber drivers in other countries, and they would go out of their way to take me to great local restaurants, I met a fashion influencer while taking the train from Paris to London 3 years ago. And we became great friends that we talk with each other almost every day. I feel we need to have more of this kind of kindness and openness here so this would open more opportunities for friendships and give people reason to help others more and be supportive.

As part of my series about the leadership lessons of accomplished business leaders, I had the pleasure of interviewing Liang ChiuLiang was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the US with his brother and mother when he was 4 years old. He has always been intrigued with many subject areas and been really friendly which makes him get along with just about anyone. Hobby-wise, he loves to travel, enjoys horseback riding, hiking, fishing, cooking, wine tasting, reading, watching movies, attends networking events, attending New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Cannes Film Festival events.

He earned his Bachelors’ Degree in Marketing and International Business from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. and MBA in Marketing from the University of Maryland-University College. His professional career has been in Growth Marketing for 20+ years. His first job after graduating from the University of Wisconsin was at Yahoo, where he got his experience with online advertising and marketing. When the dot-com bubble burst, he got into the Internet Security industry working at McAfee and Symantec. The role he took on at Symantec oversaw the Norton Antivirus brand and its online store business. This is where he got involved and fascinated with eCommerce, and leveraging Affiliate Partnerships with a variety of Business & Industries to drive growth and adoption of Norton Antivirus products and increase sales for Norton brands’ online store.

With the gaining popularity of Social Media Platforms and services in 2007, he wanted to part of the growing marketing trend he joined a series of startups in the online photo sharing space, online travel space, and fast fashion cross-border eCommerce (DTC) startups leveraging social media influencers to drive brand awareness, social media engagements, user acquisition, boost online sales. He also has spent 4 1/2 years in a boutique influencer marketing agency working with prominent global brands and startups in developing their Influencer Marketing strategies and come up with ways for brands to work with Social Media Influencers in the most effective and beneficial way possible. Then in the fall of 2019, he decided to take on a new chapter in his career and start an Influencer Marketing Consulting Business to educate DTC startups about how to work with Social Media Influencers ( from searching to vetting, and onboarding, and managing them). Additionally by networking influencers and recruiting new ones to add to my roster of influencer Rolodex for brand collaborations.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Ithink what brought me to this specific career path is my marketing roots. As Online Marketing evolved over the years, I immediately noticed the impact of influencer marketing before it became a popular trend in the last 5 years. Also, I saw how Influencer Marketing intersects with PR and its close relations in how it can propel brands while targeting relevant audiences in a short amount of time. Furthermore, I’m fascinated with the Influencer Marketing trend, there seem to be a lot of new developments in this area that sparks my interest. In my opinion, this is a natural progression of my career path since I’m relatable and be able to establish and bridge the connection for the brand and influencers to work together.

Can you tell us a story about the hard times that you faced when you first started your journey?

I guess the hard time would be when I first launched my Influencer Consultant business in the fall of 2019. It was a bit challenging to find clients in the San Francisco bay area. Since the majority of the companies here are in tech, and there is not much demand for influencers. Through some thorough research, I am able to find clients in Los Angeles, New York, and abroad in Europe. Where there are more opportunities for me to seek out new clients in the Fashion and Beauty Industry.

Where did you get the drive to continue even though things were so hard?

It’s more of a personal discipline. I have a motto of “Never Give Up”, and I have a belief that there is always a solution or alternative to solve problems. Plus timing is key. Making plans and act accordingly is helpful. Come up with several strategies and options so there is always a backup plan if one option is not working.

So, how are things going today? How did grit and resilience lead to your eventual success? Things are picking up. With eCommerce thriving during the pandemic, there is even more of a need for eCommerce companies, beauty, or fashion brands to work with influencers. I have seen my Influencer marketing consulting business (LC Interactive) picking up from having 1 client 6 months ago to 3 clients currently, and 2 pending.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Boy, I can’t think of any funny mistake when I first started out. Since I’m a person that likes to make everything I do as perfect as possible because I didn’t want to have any mistakes that would setback and cause any delays or disruptions.

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

I think what makes my influencer marketing consulting business different is that I’m able to get in touch with high-profile influencers/celebrities for brands to collaborate in an affordable capacity. Additionally, I cater to clients’ needs whether they are a startup with a limited budget or a major brand that has an unlimited budget. For the Fast Fashion eCommerce startup, they were interested in working with Brielle Biermann(from the Bravo tv show: Don’t Be Tardy), and they couldn’t see themselves pay $20K for the collaboration, so I was able to come up with a plan where and find few other 3 brands that like to collaborate with her so the cost of the collaboration is being split 4 ways and reduced the fee. Additionally, I’m constantly seeking out new Influencers to add to my roster. To date, I have accumulated over 1000+ Influencers across a wide range of consumer products space: Beauty, Fashion, Travel, Health/Wellness, etc… globally with some influencers that are willing to collaborate with brands on a base+commission type of partnership.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

I think a tip I highly recommend to my colleagues in my industry to help them thrive and not “burn out” is to make sure to have a good daily routine and structure in place. This means good time management, and like anything prioritize tasks accordingly. Moreover make sure to take a break to unwind, relax, and recharge mentally and work on a hobby or two.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I think I would love to thank my friends and former colleagues and many of the Influencers I met and became friends with over the years. They have all been instrumental in steering me to follow my passion for Influencer marketing and launching my own Influencer Marketing Consulting business. It’s their constant encouragement and support that made me take this leap of faith to create LC Interactive.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I wish I can use my success to bring goodness to the world. So far not yet. But this is something I have been thinking about for the last few months. Because of the events that happened in the past year or so we need more good things to bring joy and hope to people everywhere. I know many of the Influencers I worked with over the past 6 years are kind-hearted and very down-to-earth. So I hope to work with them to promote more peace, harmony, inclusiveness, and understanding.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me before I started leading my company” and why? Please share a story or example for each.

Actually, I never had this thought before. Since this is not the first time I launch my own business. My first time launching a business was while I was attending school at the University of Wisconsin. Initially, I was working for the University’s IT Department serving staff from professors to students within the University community with their internet connectivity, email access, assistance with software usage, and various IT needs.

There, I discovered people either calling into the IT helpline or walk-in for help there is typically a wait time of 45 minutes — 1 1/2 hours. I was able to form an IT consulting business with my brother and few friends that make house calls to the people in the University community, which cut their wait time. My first business venture grew 50% within 2 months, and profit grew as well. I operated this business for 4 successful years while I was in school and that’s where I got my hands-on experience, incorporating good ethics, transparency, courtesy, and reliability to make my current business without too much difficulty.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

"No one has it all figured out" with celebrity entrepreneur + influencer Elaine Rau

Elaine Rau has been featured in 500+ magazines, books, and publications and has spoken on stages all over the world on how to become a successful blogger and influencer.  Within three years, LadyBossBlogger.com has amassed an audience of 250,000+ followers across all social media platforms.

After just one year of blogging, Elaine was interviewed by the Huffington Poston her success and people started emailing her their questions which she answered in her signature courses: LadyBossBloggerCourses.com.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

I am a full-time blogger and influencer which is so crazy to say because I would never in a million years have thought that 1) I would be a business owner and 2) I would be a blogger considering how I don't really like to write! But, how it all happened, in a nutshell, was this: my boss refused to let me visit my boyfriend in Honduras after his brother was murdered because he said it would "affect sales" if I were to leave for a week, so I quit, moved to Honduras, and started my blog.

What inspired you to start your business?

I wanted to become a "lady boss blogger" and that is exactly who I became and have now helped thousands of other aspiring ladybossblogger's reach their dreams by teaching them how to do what I do through my online courses (LadyBossBloggerCourses.com)!

Where is your business based?

Chicago, but everything is online!

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I purchased my domain name, LadyBossBlogger.com, and started publishing daily blog posts.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Influencer marketing has been major for me.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

I definitely hit burnout a few months after the pandemic hit. Because everything went online, that meant my business and traffic to my website skyrocketed and monetarily everything was better than ever, but mentally I was worse than ever because I didn't have any time to breathe and relax so I just crashed. However, that helped me take the much-needed break I should have taken before, which gave me the time to refocus and regroup.

How do you stay focused?

I got several mentors to help me stay balanced. I would recommend getting a mentor for all the sections of your life that you deem important. For example, I have a career, spiritual, and life mentor. To stay balanced mentally, you need input from other people who you trust and admire in your life.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

No one has it all figured out. The people who build businesses are the ones who simply start and figure it out as they go along. You don't need to know your next 5 steps, you just need to know and the first step. If you want to take the first step and start your blog, read this: https://ladybossblogger.com/how-to-start-a-blog.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

5 Day Weekend – this book transformed my way of thinking. My favorite quote from the book is, “If you don’t find a way to make money in your sleep, you will work until you die.”

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

I love anything that will automate redundant tasks and have been using SmarterQueue since the start of my business. It's a social media scheduler that posts everything on a 90-day recycle which has saved me loads of time!

Who is your business role model? Why?

Michelle, the founder of Making Sense of Cents, is very inspirational and would be a great person to interview! She taught me how to master affiliate marketing and helped me take my blog and business to the next level.

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

I like to get an hour-long massage to relax, decompress, and re-energize myself. Self-care and health are my TOP priorities. Without health, you can't enjoy your wealth.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

My first priority is to ENJOY LIFE and take as many weekend trips as possible to relax and enjoy the friendships I have built along the way.

"If you are passionate about it and authentic (not trying to be someone you’re not) I have no doubt you can succeed" with Jené Luciani

Jene Luciani

I’m Jené Luciani, an internationally-renowned bestselling author of four books, a nationally known bra guru, a lifestyle expert, and reporter on national TV shows such as Today and Dr. Oz, touted as one of Woman’s World Magazine’s “Ultimate Experts,” brand ambassador, TEDTalk speaker, and a busy Mom!

Can you tell our readers about your background?

I always say it takes 20 years to become an overnight success! I started as a TV news producer right out of college. I was immediately thrown into the fire, so to speak, covering the terrorist attacks on 9/11 from ground zero and the presidential elections. I moved to NYC where I continued in local news then learned of a job from a friend, doing media relations for a broadcast PR company that specialized in lifestyle and fashion. My parents owned a clothing boutique while I was growing up so I was always drawn to the topic, and even had a fashion advice column in my high school newspaper! When I took that job, I began producing fashion content for the company and covered fashion week in NYC, interviewing designers like Michael Kors and Betsy Johnson.

I began reaching out to magazines to freelance write and ended up becoming the fashion editor and columnist for The Wag, a magazine in Westchester County, NY, where I lived. Through that, I started booking myself on camera as a fashion expert and got the idea for my first book (and now bestselling book) The Bra Book (which is now in its second printing!) Local tv spots led to national and I know am the author of 4 books (also Get It! Co-authored with Jacqueline Laurita, and GiGi Gets a Bra), and spent a decade as a regular fixture on shows including Today, Dr. Oz and Wendy! I also speak at events and do public appearances, and work as a brand ambassador. Most recently, I launched SOMA Intimates on QVC and served as their brand ambassador on the network for two years. I also work as the brand ambassador for SKINEEZ Skincarewear. Now, I’m working on my own bra line that I think will help to uplift women everywhere in a unique way that hasn’t been seen yet!

What inspired you to start your business?

I have always been driven to follow my heart and my passion. I also truly love helping other women and busy moms like myself! This is the best of both worlds because I get to see my creative visions come to life, as well as feel like I’m making a difference in women’s lives.

Where is your business based?

I’m in New York’s Capital Region.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

Leaving a full-time producing job to branch out on my own took a huge leap of faith. I had the idea for The Bra Book at the time, which many around me thought was silly. I knew I’d be able to turn it into something special. I started by putting my LinkedIn profile out there and that I was working on a book. My literary agents found me through that. I also researched how to write a non-fiction book proposal. I freelanced to pay the bills in the meantime. Getting my book deal was the huge first step in branding myself and becoming the influencer and consultant I am today.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

I am very PR and marketing savvy so that helps a lot. I networked as much as possible, and explored any and every opportunity and avenue!

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

I have had many no’s along the way, many naysayers and many doors slammed in my face. I just don’t let it get to me! More recently, as I’ve had many years of success, I’ve had people actively try and hurt my reputation or my business. You have to just stay positive and keep it moving. I believe in the law of attraction and what you put out, comes back to you. I try to live my life by that motto.

How do you stay focused?

With 4 kids and them basically at home all the time due to the pandemic, I can tell you it has not been easy! You just do the best you can to stay on track. I just make sure that whatever I’m doing, I feel passionate and good about it. If I don’t, it’s not right.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

There can only be one you!

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

I’ve formed relationships with other reporters so that they come to me when there is a bra article…just keeping my name out there helps! Being visible on social media helps too.

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

If you are passionate about it and authentic (ie not trying to be someone you’re not) I have no doubt you can succeed. I am proof!

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

I don’t really utilize many apps other than the social ones and my favorite books are those by authors like Gabby Bernstein and Abraham-Hicks. They help me stay positive and on-track, manifesting the next big thing in my life!

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

The Facebook groups for PR and media professionals (Sharing Opps and PRMM) have been very helpful, as well as HARO (help a reporter).

Who is your business role model? Why?

OPRAH and Martha Stewart! Both have made a living off their passion, and in an amazing way, help so many others. They are also authentic and unabashedly themselves.

How do you balance work and life?

Every day is different and often times the scales tip one way or the other. I just do the best I can! If I’m overloaded with work, I take the time to work. I try to make sure we have lots of family time too which hasn’t been hard lately!

What’s your favorite way to decompress?

The Spa!!!! And family bike rides.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

The future is pretty uncertain for many of us with the pandemic so I focus on the moment and living one day at a time!

"My biggest piece of advice is to collaborate and work with influencers" with Chloe Panta

Chloe Panta

Chloe Panta is a holistic therapist, healer, NLP Practitioner, and Spiritual Life Coach. She has spent the last six years of her life helping people transform their lives and live out their fairytale realities.  She began her career as a spiritual coach, helping men and women overcome trauma, anxiety, and depression naturally. As a natural healer, She helps women and men across the world remove money and mindset blocks so that they can live life on their terms and manifesting their dreams into reality.

What is your background?

I’ve always been an entrepreneur in some form of my life but I spent my time in HR in corporate America and learned the foundation of how companies are built and sustained. With that knowledge, I felt a calling to help people in some way and studied and trained to become a life coach. I have been able to use the tools I learned in the corporate world and incorporate them into my business.

How did you get involved in your industry?

I felt I wasn’t really happy in my role in HR and that I wanted to do more with my life. I wanted a way to help people in a different way and I began to seek out answers. I came across a website that trained life coaches and I immersed myself into coaching and dug deeper into spirituality. It changed my life and I wanted a way to help change the lives of others. I have been doing inner work for the past 5 years and answers I was searching for just kind of fell into my lap. Afterlife coaching training, I began studying other techniques, such as quantum physics, NLP, hypnotherapy, and energy work – all in which I incorporate in my life and the lives of others.

What three things does someone starting in your industry need to know?

You need to have a passion for helping people and a passion for growing on a spiritual level. Those are the foundations for this type of business. You also need to take a walkout on faith and have an inner knowing that this is the work you’re called to do. If you have those three modalities, everything else will fall into place.

What would you do differently if you were starting in your industry now?

I would fully immerse myself in learning and growing. There is a plethora of information out there available for anyone to start a holistic business today. You just have to have a passion for it. I would also start with a social media platform and grow an audience of loyal fans who want to hear what you have to say. I’d start with Instagram, as that’s what I use now and I love it. I’d focus on one or two platforms so I can grow them successfully and nurture the audience from those one or two platforms.

Which people or resources have had the most influence on your growth and why?

I would say growing an engaged audience has had the biggest growth for me. It’s allowed me to grow my email list and help people who are looking for what I’m offering. Posting content regularly on social media with a call to action has worked as well as reaching out to other people in my industry that have larger audiences and asking to collaborate with them to help spread the word about who I am and what I do has worked as well. The more people who know about what you do and know your name, the better as you can start to generate an organic audience without the use of paid ads.

Talk about the biggest failure you've had. What did you learn from it?

My biggest failure what last year when I wasn’t for sure what I wanted to do anymore. I was shifting from doing something strictly for money into doing more heart and soul work. It was a bit scary at first because when you leave a safety net to doing something you believe in fully – sometimes you question your rationale on if this is the right decision.

After some inner reflection, I decided that I wanted to build my business based on helping people and that the money would follow because I genuinely, deep down inside, just wanted people to realize their full potential. After a few days, I got a client who just happened to find my information somewhere online and I began shifting my business into more heart and soul work. It helped me realize that I have to listen to myself and my own inner voice for decisions. A lot of outside information may steer me unintentionally in the wrong direction and I have to ultimately make the decision as to where I want my business to go and how to grow my business, holistically.

Now, we’re going to pivot to Instagram. We’re looking for actionable tips our readers can implement immediately.

I use Instagram to tell stories, generate leads, and engage my audience. This is how I nurture my list, grow my platform, and provide value.

What are your favorite features? Why?

I love Instagram Stories. I feel I can get really personal on there and tell my audience how I’m feeling or what I’m going through. My father passed away in May and I was really hurt by it and I had a way to express my grief through Stories, in the hope to let off some pressure but also help someone else who may be grieving as well.

What is your favorite Instagram marketing tip?

My biggest piece of advice is to collaborate and work with influencers. They are your chance to helping you create a larger, engaged audience. Work with influencers that compliment your niche and have an audience similar to yours. I’d also suggest posting product teasers that will gently nudge your audience to buy your product or service.

How can entrepreneurs grow their Instagram followings and increase engagement?

Post content that is relevant to what your audience wants to see. If you’re solving a problem, hit the pain point on the head with whatever your audience is facing. If you’re a money mindset coach, talk to them about how having a scarcity-mindset is preventing your audience from growing or living their true potential. Focus on how you help solve their number one problem. Ask your audience questions and reply to comments they leave you. Your audience wants you to be engaged with them as much as they engage in your content.

How can someone just starting out use Instagram to reach potential customers?

Post engaging content that leads your readers to a call to action. Engage in your audience’s posts. Like their pictures, leave comments on their photos, ask them questions. This shows you really care about your audience and how you can help them with the problem that you are trying to solve as an expert in your field.

"Hire for problem-solving skills" with David Morneau

David Morneau

David Morneau is CEO and co-founder of inBeat.co, an influencer discovery engine for TikTok and Instagram. He has also co-founded inBeat.agency, which helps online brands work with micro-influencers at scale. Their team has orchestrated 13 000+ collaborations with micro-influencers.

What is your background? How did you get involved in your industry?

I finished a law degree, and I hated it. While I was finishing my studies, I got involved in a Startup Weekend (a Google-sponsored event where teams build a company over a weekend) and fell in love with technology and the Internet as a whole.

I began looking for ways to work in the industry, and that’s when I started helping local business owners build their online presence. We grew that local practice into a small team of 5 employees by doing web design, social media management, and SEO.

We were exposed to an e-commerce brand through our work. Our team completely fell in love with the richness of e-commerce marketing. The scale of our efforts was just shocking for us. With the same amount of effort, we could drive 5x to 10x the results we were driving for local businesses.

We uncovered micro-influencer marketing by accident, and we stuck to it as our core service. The untapped potential of the channel excites me. It gives me that feeling for which I started doing what I’m doing.

We repositioned ourselves as a scaled micro-influencer marketing service. Our work is specialized for brands that are looking to work with hundreds of influencers. From there, we built our own software to find influencers, and we are now selling it under a Software as a Service model.

What three things does someone starting in your industry need to know?

-       Stay focused. Selling a single service is much easier than selling multiple services. You can streamline your work, specialize, and partner with other agencies without being in direct competition with them

-       Keep your eye open for opportunity. It’s hard, as it contradicts the first piece of advice. The challenging part is recognizing a real opportunity. We all suffer from Shiny-Object Syndrome, which distorts our ability to know if something is a real opportunity.

-       Hire for problem-solving skills. Everything in online marketing is easy to execute once you have a step-by-step. The real challenge lies in the way you tackle problems. Problem-solving is the skill I chase at all costs in our team members.

What would you do differently if you were starting in your industry now?

I would invest a lot more in partnerships. 80% of our sales come from referrals from other agencies and partners. It’s crazy how powerful these partnerships are. I would cold email people, get on a call with them, try to see how I can help, and build relationships. These actions can seem useless, but they compound.

Which people or resources have had the most influence on your growth and why?

Jake from Leadcookie had such a profound impact on what I do. The guy is a relationship builder, and it is his biggest asset, by far. He just builds deep relationships with other entrepreneurs and leverages the network effect it generates.

Ryan Stewart from webris.org also had a profound impact on what I do. This entrepreneur is a systems thinker, which has brought much clarity to how I run operations.

Talk about the biggest failure you've had. What did you learn from it?

The biggest failure I had was during the early days of our agency. Not knowing much about how this whole Internet thing worked, we were taking on pretty much anything that was thrown our way.

While migrating one of our client’s websites, I destroyed their entire email setup. This was a construction company, which managed all their project management by email. I remember the amount of anxiety I went through. I was at their office for 5 days, just scraping backups from their local email servers. It was a pain. I learned that before you touch something, make sure you have backups. It will save you so much time to have a backup. I also learned to talk to smart people, before touching something you do something in which you have no knowledge.

Now, we’re going to pivot to Instagram. We’re looking for actionable tips our readers can implement immediately.

How does your business use Instagram?

We use Instagram as a means of creating partnerships for e-commerce brands we work with. We have orchestrated 13 000+ collaborations, and we are well on our way to 20 000. Instagram has brought our clients’ outsized returns.

What are your favorite features? Why?

My favorite Instagram feature is the swipe-up because it allows you to direct traffic outside the platform, and to your website.

Here is a quick playbook, which still has a lot of potential:

1.     Contact influencers with 10,000 to 25,000 followers in your niche. Give them freebies (product, exclusive app access, etc.)

2.     Host a contest for which the user signs up with their email address on a landing page

3.     Have your influencers promote this contest through swipe-ups.

This tactic works like a charm.

What is your favorite Instagram marketing tip?

Personalized outreach is underutilized. Record a quick video of yourself and pitch big pages your brand could leverage through DM.

How can entrepreneurs grow their Instagram followings and increase engagement?

Create repostable content. A lot of pages live off repost. They will typically have a hashtag you can use for a chance to be reposted to their feed. Tag your pictures with those hashtags. In those reposts, you get a mention, which will bring followers and engagement.

How can someone just starting out use Instagram to reach potential customers?

Check out the following of your competitors and start interacting with them (DM, follow, comment, etc.) I would also look at creating partnerships with bigger pages in your space. Find something you can offer them that will get their attention.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

I started my career in the wedding industry and climbed the corporate ladder, but ended up becoming an entrepreneur instead. I never had any aspirations to start my own business, instead my circumstances forced me to.

What inspired you to start your business?

I had just quit my job and moved to Honduras because my brother-in-law was murdered. In all honesty, I wasn't trying to start a business, I was just desperate and needed a purpose to get out of bed, which is why I started blogging.

Where is your business based?

Chicago, but everyone on my team works remotely.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

I bought my blog domain, created a new email account specifically for business and claimed my new brand's name on all the important social media channels.

What has been the most effective way of raising awareness for your business?

Social media, email marketing and word of mouth. I use social media to share my blog posts and email marketing to nurture the relationship with my readers, which leads them to start talking about my business to their friends and they either become 1) loyal followers 2) customers 3) or interns and the cycle continues.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

Deciding what direction to take my brand. I try things out for a few months and if it's working I continue, if not, I pivot. For example, I used to only post interviews on my blog but people kept asking me about guest blogging opportunities so I decided to open that up for a bit to see if it would take off and it did so I continued.

How do you stay focused?

I change up my environment. I work at a different coffee shop or take a month long trip someplace because in order for me to stay focused, I need different creative stimuli.

How do you differentiate your business from the competition?

Most people spend months and even years figuring out how to make money blogging, it took me a week to start making an income on my blog and only a year for it to sustain me full-time... I teach everything I know in my courses, I don't hold back which my students have all told me that they really appreciate. Also I give a TON of stuff away for free to people on my email list

What has been your most effective marketing strategy to grow your business?

What's your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?

The only difference between those that succeed and those that don't is that they didn't give up.

What's your favorite app, blog, and book? Why?

I couldn't do business without my handy social media schedulers:

  • SmarterQueue – for growing Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn on autopilot. I have my content on a 90-day loop and haven't touched my social media for over a year, yet it looks like I'm always online.

  • Tailwind – for growing Pinterest on autopilot, also this is the only scheduler that Pinterest has approved. Don't use anything else seriously, I would know, my first account was shut down.

  • Planoly – for growing your Instagram and to visually plan out your feed. Additionally, it’s one of the few Instagram-approved schedulers out there.

What's your favorite business tool or resource? Why?

Who is your business role model? Why?

Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, the founder of Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing, she taught me everything I know about affiliate marketing and helped me take my business to the next level through her courses.

What do you have planned for the next six months?

Get more speaking gigs!

How do you balance work with life?

I don't say yes to everything, in fact I say NO a LOT. I don't cramp my schedule full of responsibilities and make sure to take weekends off to do something fun.
